What is the 5P Approach?

The 5P Approach provides a pro-active and positive approach to behaviour intervention. It uses a clear, structured and practical framework used by professionals, parents and organisations to meet individual needs and to understand, prevent and manage behaviour change. Since its development, the 5P Approach has been adopted by many schools, care homes and organisations. The approach can be used with individuals and with classes and groups. It is however, most successful when used as a basis for a whole school or organisation approach. The 5P Approach is also successfully used within the home setting.
The 5P Approach was developed by Linda Miller, an educational psychologist with a specialism in autism and behaviour. Although the primary focus in the early days was working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder or special educational needs & disability, the 5P Approach's flexible and personalised framework can be used within any organisation and with any individual whatever their needs. The 5P Approach
   Philosophy

 The 5P Approach promotes GREEN
behaviour intervention. At its core is a focus on prevention (being in the GREEN
zone) rather than "cure". Underpinning the 5P Approach philosophy is the view that maintaining positive well-being and meeting individual needs (being in the GREEN Zone) is the key to preventing behaviour issues from arising. Using the 5P Approach therefore begins by establishing solid foundations (GREEN zone) - creating an approach and environment which meets needs, maintains positive well-being and where behaviour issues are at a minimum.
The 5P Approach uses a GREEN, AMBER
& RED traffic light hierarchy to distinguish between levels of intervention in both problem-solving and planning.
A key focus is on developing the skills of the individual, staff and carers and ensuring involvement of the whole "team".

   The 5P Approach          Resources

Picture
The 5P Approach has a number of distinctive resources which reflect the 5P elements and guide you through the 5P process. This includes monitoring and evaluating progress. The aim is to keep things as simple as possible (but making sure all the necessary information is there!) and to provide a record keeping system which ensures consistency and continuity. The 5P Approach is all about TEAMWORK

How the 5P Approach
is used

The 5P Approach is best used as a whole school /organisation framework which sets out the overall guiding approach and underpins all intervention. Within this, the 5P Approach is also used at an individual level to ensure that individual needs are met, to maintain positive well-being and to prevent behaviour issues from arising (see below).

The 5P Approach has two distinct elements

Picture
These two elements overlap and interact.

1. Meeting needs and staying GREEN .

Using the 5P Approach always starts with GREEN. The priority is understanding the individual  (or organisation) really well (PROFILE - the first "P") and using this information to begin to create the GREEN Zone. Read more here

2. Tackling the "tricky" issues.
This element uses the 5P Approach Problem-solving Pathway (the 5 “P”s) using the GREEN, AMBER & RED colours. For the individual this means looking at behaviour & why things are happening and creating a plan which aims to prevent (GREEN), to pre-empt (AMBER) and to manage (RED) issues which arise. The same Problem-solving Pathway is used at the organisational level. This involves the creation of a GREEN zone, identifying areas for action or development, prioritising and action planning.
