Using 5P at Home
Can the 5P Approach be used at home?
Although initially used within the school setting, the philosophy & principles of the 5P Approach can equally be used within the home. Since its development, the 5P Approach has been used very successfully within the home setting and within care homes and residential schools. Parents using the 5P Approach at home may have heard about the 5P Approach from their child's school and have been able to share and adapt strategies used within school. Other parents have heard about and begun to use the 5P Approach through reading Linda's books, through word of mouth or through finding this website.
Many parents & carers have attended the 5P Approach courses, including the specifically designed " Understanding, preventing and managing behaviour - using the 5P Approach in the home" parent/carer workshop. This workshop looks at why behaviour difficulties might occur, common problems and differences (what can go wrong), why these happen (what can cause these) and what can be done to prevent & manage them. Using the 5P Approach at home also involves using the three traffic light colours RED, AMBER & GREEN.

Staying "GREEN" at home
The 5P Approach places a focus on adopting the 5P Approach philosophy within the home setting to ensure their child's positive well-being and to prevent behaviour issues from arising; creating a GREEN Zone and staying GREEN (Of course homes and families are very different from schools, colleges and care homes and there is no expectation that parents & carers should turn their homes into schools!)
The 5P Approach has two distinct elements, both used within the home setting. The first, "Meeting needs and staying GREEN" sets about creating a GREEN Zone for your child. The second, "Tackling the “tricky “ issues (RED behaviours)" involves using the 5P problem-solving pathway & to create a 5P behaviour plan for everyone to use at home.
Where do we start?
1. Using the 5P Approach always starts with GREEN. The priority is understanding the individual well (PROFILE - the first "P") and using this information to begin to create an Individual GREEN Zone, a plan which sets out exactly what the individual needs and what the adults around them can do to ensure the GREEN Zone is in place. The 5P Approach parent / carer training shows how parents can use their knowledge and understanding about their child to create an Individual Green Zone in the home setting ( and share with others who work or interact with their child). The training session also includes taking a look at GREEN strategies you can use in the home setting. 5P Resource materials such as the "5P Approach Profile" for parents & "My GREEN Zone" support the whole process.
What does a home GREEN Zone look like?
Each home GREEN Zone is unique as it is designed specifically around the child. However the basic principles & philosophy are always the same. The home GREEN Zone looks at three main areas.
1. Communication - what your child needs to communicate what they want and need, their thoughts and views and their emotions & what the adults around them need to do to ensure that they communicate effectively. This might be using visual aids such as pictures or symbols, using particular words or phrases, setting up times for individual to share worries etc.
2.Environment - what you can set up at home to support your child. This looks at things such as the use of a calm space or energy space, sensory issues ( noise) , personal spaces, safety,order/colour/display etc
3. The third part of the home GREEN Zone is to look at all the GENERAL strategies you are or can use at home which make sure the individual maintains positive well-being and prevent behaviour issues from arising. This might include strategies such as using timetables or schedules, using timers, reward charts, worry books, special boxes etc as well as the strategies you know already work such as giving warning before things change, giving a choice of activity etc.
The contents of the GREEN Zone are shared with all those who interact with the individual to ensure that everyone understands their needs and keeps things consistent ( of course this also means involving the individual in putting the GREEN Zone together and sharing the completed plan with them)
What about managing the problems that arise at home?
This involves the second element of the 5P Approach, Tackling the "tricky" issues. This begins by finding out why an individual behaves in certain ways, what factors influence their behaviour and identifying early warning signs (the AMBER behaviours). This uses the Problem-Analysis and Problem-solve ( the 3rd and 4th of the 5Ps) elements of the 5P Approach to create a 5P behaviour plan (the fifth P) which aims to change the behaviour and put things in place at GREEN to prevent issues arising in the future.
The 5P Approach behaviour plan sets out strategies and actions at GREEN, AMBER & RED with the aim of getting back to GREEN as soon as possible if an issue arises. The aim is to share the plan with everyone to ensure a consistent approach. Once the behaviour issues are beginning to resolve, the strategies used are then put into the GREEN Zone to ensure that similar behaviour issues are prevented.
