The 5Ps

What are the 5 “P”s?  Each ‘P’ represents a stage or step in the 5P framework & process:-

1st P = Profiling ( knowing all about the individual)
This information is used to inform the INDIVIDUAL GREEN ZONE - X is like this ( Profile) so this is what they need
2nd P= Prioritising (placing behaviours in a hierarchy of colour coded GREEN, AMBER & RED)

These next stages are used to tackle "tricky" issues:-

3rd P= Problem Analysis (working out what is happening)
4th P= Problem Solving ( working out why it happens)
5th P =Planning ( working  out what to do about it - at GREEN, AMBER & RED)

The 5"P"s therefore provide a five-step pathway which takes you from understanding the individual and planning for their needs (prevention) to identifying behaviour and understanding the reason it occurs and planning and implementing a comprehensive intervention programme. The 5P Approach aims to provide a complete package and process which can be used time and time again to identify what the individual needs and ensure well-being and to problem-solve any issues as and when they arise.
The approach therefore provides a clear process to follow, one step at a time, and a recording framework for collecting and using all the information needed for each stage and to record, monitor and evaluate progress. As well as information on how to complete each stage, the 5P Approach provides a number of coloured record sheets to aid the process.  While clearly defining the steps you need to take, it also allows for flexibility in the range of materials provided which can be used according to need and individual situations.

Using the 5"P"s as a process to develop a whole school or organisation approach

The same 5 step process is used as a basis for a whole school or organisation approach to autism/SEND/behaviour and provides a framework for developing best practice, consistency and continuity across the whole school or organisation i.e.

1 = Profiling (a clear picture or the organisation - an audit of "where are we now?")

2 = Prioritising (working out what is the most important / urgent thing to tackle)

3 = Problem Analysis (working out what is going wrong)

4 = Problem Solving (working out why & what is needed to put it right)

5 = Planning ( working  out what to do about it & action planning)

The new 5P Approach materials, specifically designed for work at the organisation level, provide a framework for monitoring and evaluating progress and quality across the organisation.
