Why does it work?
Why does the 5P Approach work? Over the years, the 5P Approach has been used successfully by a range of professionals and within a range of organisations. It is also successfully used within the home setting. Feedback from those using it reports the 5P Approach to be a framework that flexible and is easy to follow and is one which works!
The 5P Approach works because it has its base in psychological theory, it is easy to follow and sets out a framework and process which provides guidance & support for both the individual and the adults working or living with them.
The 5P Approach places an emphasis on the process of behaviour intervention. It takes a look at the whole picture from how to prevent behaviour issues from arising (Green) to working out how to deal with challenging situations (at Amber or Red). The 5P Approach takes an "Interactionist" or "Biopsychosocial" perspective giving due weight to the individual, their thoughts, feelings and needs and to the interaction of the individual with their environment ( family, peers, teachers, classroom setting, community). The 5P Approach therefore produces a clear and robust framework which has benefits for the individual and for the adults working with them. A recent independent evaluation of the 5P Approach by Dr Catherine Carroll gives overwhelming evidence of the positive aspects of using the approach. Follow this link to read more.

What does the 5P Approach provide for the adults?
The most important part of any behaviour intervention process is the role played by the adults involved. It is essential that those working or living with the individual understand their needs and their behaviour. A consistent and structured approach is also an essential factor in prevention and successful intervention. Maintaining consistency between adults in teams or families is always a struggle.
The 5P Approach provides a framework designed specifically to address these issues by providing a model which:

- Provides intervention at three levels
- Green (the preventative level), Amber (the pro-active level) & Red (the reactive level)
- Focuses on prevention rather than reaction (the process of moving from Red – Green is integral to the Approach)

- Promotes effective communication between adults
- Promotes a "team" approach
- Provides shared language
- Provides shared understanding
- Provides shared goals
- Provides shared actions
- Provides a framework to follow for the whole process
- Promotes learning (and the opportunity to change and learn new skills) from experience.
